RIVERDALE, Ill. (CBS) — Officers in south suburban Riverdale fired shots Sunday after someone in a stolen car pointed a gun at them, police said.
Around 12:15 p.m., Riverdale police officers spotted a stolen vehicle heading through town and tried to pull it over, police said. But even before the officers turned on the lights and sirens in their squad car, the car went onto the sidewalk into an attempt to flee, police said.
The driver of the stolen car then hit another car, damaging the front tire of the stolen car, police said. Officers finally pinned in the stolen car at 146th and Halsted streets.
While pinned, the front passenger in the stolen car raised a gun and pointed it at one of the officers, police said. At that point, another officer in a different vehicle fired multiple rounds at the armed person, police said.
Riverdale police did not specify if this person was hit.
Meanwhile, multiple other people bailed from the stolen car and crossed into Harvey, police said. Two people were arrested on the spot, while a Cook County helicopter, Illinois State Police airplane, multiple K-9 units, and outside police agencies were deployed to search for the others.
Two guns were recovered—one being a handgun with a high-capacity magazine, the other a modified automatic handgun, police said.
No officers were hurt.
Police said a short time after the incident, someone was dropped off at a local hospital with “consistent injuries” who might have been involved, police said.
Riverdale police detectives are investigating, as is the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.
