The Yankees have found their new radio voice, closing in on a deal with Mariners TV announcer Dave Sims to be John Sterling’s replacement in the WFAN booth.
The New York Post was the first to report the play-by-play news. The Yankees made the decision official with an announcement Thursday evening. According to The Athletic, the deal will be for two years.
Sterling, who was the Yankees’ primary radio voice for nearly four decades, announced his retirement this past April. A mix of broadcasters — Justin Shackil, Emmanuel Berbari and Rickie Ricardo — filled in for the legend during the regular season. Sterling then returned for the Yankees’ postseason run, calling games in October after tuning up over the last homestand before the playoffs. His last hurrah in the Yankees’ booth culminated with a World Series run that ended with a loss to the Dodgers in five games.
Sims, 71, will be returning to New York as he worked as a sports talk host on WFAN with Ed Coleman from 1989 to 1993. He’s worked as the Mariners’ play-by-play voice since 2007, coming over with a surplus of experience.
Ricardo, the Spanish play-by-play voice for the Yankees and Philadelphia Eagles, was also a finalist to replace Sterling.
Sims will join Suzyn Waldman in the WFAN booth. Waldman has been calling Yankees games since 2005.
